(First published on The Contented Calf website on Wednesday 12th September 2012, when we had a 3YO and 5MO.) After a happy drop-off at nursery with all smiles, no tears, as I headed back home on the bus, I realised that today was turning out to be a good day. It may have only been 8:35am, but already I was ready to brand it a success! And here’s why: Successes 6:19am – after last week’s horrendous lack of sleep, for the second day in a row, I woke naturally –yey!! 6:20am – snuck downstairs, drank half of a smoothie I’d made yesterday,...

(First published on The Contented Calf website on Wednesday 25th January 2012. BF is approaching 2.5 years old and we're wondering whether we should try potty training again...) As you may remember from our exploits back in mid-end July last year (The best-laid plans of mice and mummies and Totally potty?), we initially attempted potty/toilet training with BF a while ago, but abandoned it due to a tearful plea to stay in nappies after one post-lunch sleep. The start of term always seems like a bit of a whirlwind: last minute shoe shopping; trying on uniform to see what fits and what we need more of; getting hair cuts; squeezing in last minute play dates; and then bundling out of the door on the first day, hoping that we've at least...

(First published on The Contented Calf website on Wednesday 4th January 2012. BF is approaching 2.5 years old and we're just getting back to our normal routine after the Christmas break...) “…. You’re all alone, and so peaceful until….” Although yesterday (Tuesday) was the first official day back at work/nursery/normality etc after Christmas and New Year, it was this morning that made me smile a wry smile. Hubby normally does the Monday morning nursery run, which means that we both get up just before 7:00am – he to jump in the shower and get ready, me to get BF up and...

(First published on The Contented Calf website on Tuesday 25th October 2011.) One Thursday morning a couple of months ago, I suddenly realised it was approaching 11am and BF and I had not really done anything. I wasn’t really that bothered as it was half-term from her usual Thursday morning swimming lessons and so we didn’t have to rush anywhere. And to be honest, I was quite enjoying just pottering around. However, it did spark off me hearing this song on my internal jukebox. I’m not sure the words are entirely correct, but these are the ones that came to me,...
