Sometimes I wish I could give up.

Dear friends, family and followers, Sometimes I wish I could just give up.   And I bet you wish I would too sometimes… ;-)   Give up going on and on (and on) about the climate crisis.   Stop banging on about taking climate action.   Quit posting things on social media that make my friends feel anxious, overwhelmed, panicked, uncomfortable, stressed.   I know I seem always happy, always confident, always positive, but there is part of me that is simply desperate to give up. To just stop. To walk away. To no longer feel the despair, the...

COP 26: What you should know

What does COP mean? C.O.P. stands for Conference Of Parties. These parties are the 197 countries that have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In 1994 the UNFCCC recognised there was a problem with climate change and bound member states to act in the interests of human safety even in the face of scientific uncertainty.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The objective of the Convention is to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations "at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human induced) interference with the climate system." It states that "such a level should be achieved within a time-frame sufficient to allow ecosystems to...

Climate Justice: Fighting to solve the climate crisis and racial inequality

Black History Month       October is Black History Month in the UK. (It is February in the US.) It was first launched in London in the 1980s, with the aim the local community challenging racism and educating themselves and others about the British history that was not taught in schools, and to recognise the contributions that many generations of people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK.[i]  With this is mind, I didn’t want to let October pass without acknowledging Black History Month. And as The Contented Company is focussed on the environment and how...

Life After Lockdown: Will The Environment Be Better Off?

Covid 19 - Humans 0 : Environment 1 Alongside the devastation of the Covid 19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns – sickness, death, loss, isolation, anxiety, depression and economic uncertainty, we have all seen the good news stories of environment recovery. Crystal clear waters in Venice. Turtles hatching from their eggs in peace and successfully making it into the sea in enormous numbers in India, Brazil, Florida and many other places.  Dramatic photos of clean air in places which have only known smog for decades have been circulating the internet.  Delhi The Himalays   Los Angeles And closer to home, Goats...

Global Climate Strikes: Did you strike?

Friday 20th September, around the world, people took part in the Global Climate Strikes. Were you there? Did you strike? Did your kids? Did your kids’ schools do anything?Weren’t the scenes of the strikes around the world so inspiring and energising? In particular the picture of the strike @gretathunberg posted happening in Afghanistan. This is, as she says, a globally emergency. And it seemed on Friday that we came together around the world to acknowledge this and lobby politicians and big businesses to do more.Sadly, I wasn’t there. My 7YO was off school ill with a cold. I was gutted. But I...
