Spring Update: Eco Learn, Eco Hope, Eco Act

Since the start of Contented Earth, my mantra has been: Eco Learn, Eco Hope, Eco Act. I want to help people learn more about environmental and climate issues, not despair, but feel hopeful, but also understand that we can only create hope through our actions. And underpinning those three 'columns' has been my desire to create a community of people who feels supported and inspired to take climate and environmental action.  Find out more about what's on offer...👇 Eco Learn Eco Learn. 3 Quick Tips on Transitioning to Non-Dairy Milk

1. Try lots of different milks I've settled on oat milk as I find the consistency (and taste) most similar to dairy milk. But others love Soy, Almond, sweetened, unsweetened. Have a play around to find what you taste buds like.🥛 2. Transition your (and your family's) tastebuds slowly. It DOES taste different. What I did was start by using 3:1 parts dairy to non dairy milk - in my coffee, on my cereal, in béchamel sauces, and slowly change the ratio. UK National Breastfeeding Week 2020 20th - 26th June

Like many new mothers, her decision to breastfeed didn’t start off as plain sailing. In fact it was a very stressful  period. Luckily for her,  her mother decided to research foods that aid the production of breast milk and she began to incorporate them into her home cooking. With her new lactogenic diet and...

#tbt One from the Archive: Top 10 Lactogenic Foods for Breastfeeding Mums: Fennel

(First published on The Contented Calf website on Friday 4th November 2016.) Fennel is good for breastfeeding. But what is it? Fennel is a flowering plant in the carrot family, with yellow flowers and feathery leaves, and is originally indigenous to the Mediterranean coast.[1] The bulb of the plant can be eaten as a vegetable, as can the stalks. The seeds are often used as a spice, either whole or ground, and are often used in Indian, Asian and Middle Eastern cooking.[2] In her book Mother Food, Hilary Jacobson writes that long before cattle, sheep and goats were domesticated and we...

Reducing My Family's Carbon Footprint: Our Carbon ‘Foodprint’

As you are probably aware, I am looking at ways for our family to reduce our carbon footprint. The first area I looked at was our upcoming car change and whether we could improve our carbon footprint in that area. But another area we are also looking at in tandem with this, is changing our diet to help reduce our carbon footprint.   The impact of food on our family’s carbon footprint Depending on which study you look at, the production of food and drink makes up around 15-25% of the total greenhouse gas emissions for the UK – that’s...
