Earth Month: Friday Lunchtime Lives - meet Laura from Seven Shades

On Friday 9th of April Laura from Seven Shades joined me for one of the Friday Lunchtime Lives I'm doing over Earth Month. Meet Laura and discover all about her business, what inspired her to take environmental action, what she's trying to do to restore our Earth (the theme of Earth Day 2021).   • Who you are and what does your business do? My name is Laura. I run Seven Shades - a sustainable clothing brand in between my full time job and my motherly and wifely duties.     • How did you came to start an Eco...

(First published on The Contented Calf website on Tuesday 12th February 2013. With a three year old and a 10 month old in tow, sleep was always on my mind....) To be honest, all I really want to do when I go to sleep is sleep. For the whole night. And wake up naturally. If I could do this for a whole seven nights in a row, I would be in heaven. I would be a new woman. This morning however when the alarm went off at 6:45am I was a tiny bit less tired than I often am. I think...

UK National Breastfeeding Week 2020 20th - 26th June

To celebrate National Breastfeeding Week 2020, I would love to share some amazing mama run businesses that support mamas through their breastfeeding journeys. Like many new mothers, her decision to breastfeed didn’t start off as plain sailing. In fact it was a very stressful  period. Luckily for her,  her mother decided to research foods that aid the production of breast milk and she began to incorporate them into her home cooking. With her new lactogenic diet and...

First published on The Contented Calf website on Wednesday 24th July 2013. 10YO was approaching 4YO, and 8YO was was almost 18 months old.)  I’ve been thinking a lot about ‘nursing in public’ aka #NIP lately, which is bizarre since I finished breastfeeding nearly six months ago. I think it’s because I’ve recently come across @Wolf_Mummy on Twitter and her tireless work to normalise breastfeeding in public and challenge head-on Tweeters who write offensive and often aggressive tweets about/towards mums nursing in public. A slightly more tame example: Curt Blake@CurtBlake1 Jul 18, 2013 Replying to @HappyMommy @HappyMommy_ @Wolf_Mommy should be called indecent exposure like if...

My White Privilege: How do I move forward? How do I help? How do I do better?

Whilst the struggles against slavery, oppression, bigotry, prejudice and racism has lasted centuries for Black people, my understanding of my own White Privilege has only started fully developing in the past few years - since Brexit and the US 2016 election. The seeds were sown when I went to university in New York, was voted as a Senator for my building and undertook diversity and leadership training. However, my understanding has intensified and deepened over the past couple of weeks. As my understanding of my privilege as a White person has improved, I have struggled with how best to move forward...
